MoodleMoot UK 2010 Programme
(may be subject to change)
Tuesday 13 April 2010 – Day 1
09.00 – Registration and coffee (Conference Reception)
10.00 – Welcome to Delegates and official opening of MoodleMoot UK 2010 by Professor Geoffrey Crossick, Warden of Goldsmith College and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of London
10.30 – Morning keynote: Professor Sugata Mitra, Newcastle University
The ‘Hole in the Wall’ project has established itself as one of the most talked-about pieces of work for many years. Led by Professor Sugata, the work was cited as an inspiration behind the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. We count ourselves extremely privileged to get one of the best speakers on the circuit who is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Using examples from his own work, the professor will ask the conference searching questions about the impact of technology on learning and what it holds for the future.
11.30 – Parallel Breakout Session (Workshop Programme Tuesday morning 13 4 10)
12.30 – Lunch
13.30 – Afternoon keynote: Dr Ross Mackenzie, Strategic Development Manager, The Open University
The Open University has been central to the development of Moodle, not only in the UK, but globally. They have played a pivotal role in Moodle and been recent hosts of previous moots. Using Dr Mackenzie will explore the issues faced by learning providers when planning strategic development for their organisations; what should we include, what pitfalls should be avoided?
14.00 – Parallel Breakout Sessions (Workshop Programme Tuesday afternoon 13 4 10)
15.00 – Coffee break
15.30 – Closing keynote/plenary: Philip Badman, Vice Principal Funding & Planning, Newham College
Newham has undergone significant changes recently, and we’re not talking about constructing a new Olympic site for 2012! Philip Badman, Vice Principal has led on a large ILCT transformation project, which not only saw a complete migration of learning platform and associated software, but the cultural challenges of engaging staff in using it. Success saw a recent ‘Oustanding’ Ofsted inspection, and Philip will talk through Newham’s experience and the roadmap for success.
16.00 – Parallel Breakout Sessions (tbc)
16.30 – Close of first day
Day 2 – 14 April 2010
09.00 – Registration and coffee
09.30 – Welcome to day two by Martin Dougiamas (TBC)
Martin Dougiamas needs no introduction to Moodle Moot. Although he won’t be able to join us in person, we’ll be beaming him live from down under, where he will be looking ahead at the role of Moodle in future strategic developments and what’s in the pipeline. Again, one not to be missed.
10.30 – Comfort Break
11.00 – Parallel Breakout Sessions (Workshop Programme Wednesday morning 14 4 10 final)
12.00 – Lunch
13.00 – Afternoon keynote: Philip Butler & James Ballard, ULCC
Learning spaces: bridging the gap between personal and professional discourses
As we evolve within a more ‘knowledge-based’ society, knowing what to learn next becomes more relevant than what has already been learnt. This is evidenced in the recent focus on higher-order thinking or trans-disciplinary skills in the literature of personalisation, professional development, employability, PLTS and other strategic agendas. Development of such skills requires complex dialogue and is difficult to measure. How can we ensure learners engage with a sufficient range of discourses for their development and where does Moodle ‘fit’?
14.00 – Parallel Breakout Session (Workshop Programme Wednesday afternoon 14 4 10)
15.00 – Coffee break
15.30 – Closing keynote/plenary: Geoff Rebbeck, Thanet College
Geoff has become the ‘champion of champions’ in the use of learning technologies and Moodle. Winner of awards and plaudits from across the education sectors, he is an inspiration for all practitioners whether they just starting out or highly experienced. Geoff will close the conference with a call to arms! Perhaps more accurately, he will use his own experiences to explore the barriers that stop learning providers progressing and moving forward. You’ve attended Moodle Moot, you’ve got the theory, heard the solutions; so what’s the next step?
16.00 – Official close of conference
